Hemorrhoids are a symptom of another problem, which may be many things. First treat the symptom. Clean the area fully after bowel movements. You can buy some premoistened towelettes to assist with this. Use some analgesic cream after each bowel movement to reduce the swelling and irritation.

Sometimes hemorrhoids happen because of carrying around too much tension in your anus. If you’re always unconsciously clenched, you can obstruct normal blood flow and cause a blood vessel to bulge out and get torn. Sitting too long can encourage an outbreak, as can taking too long to have a BM. Take that copy of War and Peace out of the bathroom, concentrate on relaxing your anus and finishing your business directly (without straining though). If you’re able to relax your sphincters a BM shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. Concentrate on relaxing the muscles at other times, get in touch with how your anus feels. Don’t worry that everything’s going to tumble out of you if you relax your tail. Normal tonic contraction is enough, you don’t need to clench as tight as a drum.

There are other problems besides stress than can lead to recurring hemorrhoids. Talk to your doctor about this problem and see if you can address the root cause.

First line of cure is a creme or ointment like Preparation H or a generic.I usually smear it on with my (cleaned) finger rather than try to use the applicator that comes with it. Try both and see which works best. Also try suppositories (Preparation H comes in those as well, but there are other brands. Some are mostly numbing ingredients for pain.) Soak in warm or hot (but not scalding hot) water once or twice a day. If you are soaking in a plastic tub (in the US the best fit for me is to buy a shallow rectangular shaped tub with a lid–found in the storage section of a department store) add a small handful of salt. This is especially helpful if the hemorrhoids are bleeding.
In the end you might have to go under the knife, but I have avoided it for years by using these measures.
